How Much Protein Should a Vegetarian Eat?
- The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) recommends 0.36 grams of protein for each pound of body weight. Based on that, a 150-pound adult should get 54 grams of protein a day, although the PCRM also notes that most people don't actually need that much. Vegan Health recommends 0.4 grams per pound for vegetarians, which equals 60 grams a day for a 150-pound adult.
- Vegan Health notes that it's a good idea for vegetarians to consume several extra grams of protein every day by eating plenty of beans, nuts and grains. Increasing their protein intake allows vegetarians to compensate for the fact that some plant proteins aren't fully absorbed by the body.
- In the past, vegetarians and vegans were told they had to carefully combine plant proteins at each meal. Research proved otherwise. As Vegan Health points out, adequate protein in vegetarian diets has been "determined to be a non-issue by nutrition researchers."
