    • 1). Determine the seriousness of the contamination. If a person becomes seriously ill from the food he just ate, immediately dial "911" for an ambulance.

    • 2). Determine the type of food that is contaminated. If the food was consumed at a restaurant, then contact your local health department.

    • 3). Call the Food and Drug Association to report non-meat, poultry or egg food contamination. As of 2011, the association has a phone line that is manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    • 4). Contact the United States Department of Agriculture if you are dealing with meat, poultry or egg contamination. As of 2011, the phone line is manned from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday.
