How to Hook a Yellow Perch

    • 1). Tie to your fishing line to a yellow lead-head jig ranging in weight from 1/16 oz. to 1/64 oz. The jig must be heavy enough that it will maintain contact with the bottom.

    • 2). Attach a small minnow to the jig. Insert the hook into the minnow's mouth and bring it out through the top of its head.

    • 3). Fish during the day. Perch rely on sight to catch their food, so they feed only when it is light out.

    • 4). Cast or troll the jig and minnow around areas likely to hold perch. Focus on deep structure, including drop-offs and the edges of reefs and humps. Perch also can be found near the edge of weedlines.

    • 5). Set the hook anytime you feel what you believe to be a fish. A perch bite sometimes feels like a "tap-tap-tap" on your line, but not always.

    • 6). Mark the spot where you catch a perch or two. Yellow perch travel in large schools, so where you catch one you probably can catch more. Make casts to that specific spot until the fish stop biting.
