How to Shut a USB Stick Down When the Icon Is Not in the Tool Bar
- 1). Click the "Start" button, then click "Computer" or "My Computer."
- 2). Right-click the USB drive, and then click "Eject." If the "Eject" option is not displayed, click "Safely Remove." After a moment, the icon should disappear from the "Computer" or "My Computer" window, and a system tray notification should appear advising you that the USB drive can be removed. If you continue to experience a problem, continue to the next step.
- 3). Press the Windows logo and "R" keys simultaneously, then type "RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" without quotation marks in the window that appears. Press "Enter" or click "OK." The "Safely Remove Hardware" window appears.
- 4). Click the USB drive, and then click the "Stop" button. A new window opens showing a detailed description of the device. Click "OK" after confirming that you have selected the correct device.
- 5). Click "OK," and then click "Close" to return to the desktop. The USB drive can be disconnected from the computer.
