What is Metabolism and Why it so Important?

When people want to lose weight they often hear the they need to increase their metabolism but most people don't know what it is, how to increase it and why it's so important for losing weight.

After the age of 30, your body gradually begins to lose it's muscle. If your activity level stays the same and the amount of calories you eat stay the same, you will gain weight because your metabolism has slowed down (you don't have as much muscle as you did in your 20's). If you exercise with weights and do some type of aerobic activity on a regular basis, you probably won't notice much of a change in your metabolism as you age.

Metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) your body burns to maintain itself. Whether you are eating, drinking, sleeping, cleaning etc... your body is constantly burning calories to keep you going.

Metabolism is affected by your body composition. By body composition, I mean the amount of muscle you have versus the amount of fat. Muscle uses more calories to maintain itself than fat. People who are more muscular (and have a lower percentage of body fat) are said to have a higher metabolism than others that are less muscular.

Metabolism is important because it is literally the powerhouse of the body, providing energy to keep the body going. In fact, many science and biology dictionaries describe metabolism as a process which is necessary to sustain life. Without metabolism, living organisms will die, and errors in metabolic processes can cause health problems such as diabetes, in which the body fails to metabolize blood sugar properly.

How can I increase the metabolism?

This is quite a straightforward answer, you have to exercise more.

However, you can't just do a bunch of exercises, because not all exercises have a high enough resistance for your body to increase your metabolism you'll need to do the proper exercises.

That's why people who want to burn stomach fat never lose it because most of them focus on abdominal specific exercises which on their own don't increase the metabolism.

The right exercises are heavy resistance exercises such as weight lifting, with lifting weights you actually ‘beat up' your muscles around your whole body thus making your body increase the metabolism to recover all the muscles by burning calories.

It's also important to do aerobic workout such as jogging, swimming, cycling and so on to increase your heart rate which as well increases your metabolism naturally.
