How to Convert to a Digital Thermostat
- 1). Turn off the breaker that controls your heating and cooling system.
- 2). Uninstall the old thermostat. Remove the cover then disconnect the wires. Use the wire strippers to remove the old ends of each segment of wire. You need shiny copper colored wire pieces for a good electrical connection.
- 3). Install the back plate of the new digital thermostat. Loosely secure the back plate to the wall with the corner installation screws and your screwdriver. Thread each wire through the back plate and attach it to its corresponding connection point on the back plate. The connection points are usually color coordinated where red goes to red and yellow goes to yellow. Tighten the connection points as these will conduct the electrical current of the thermostat. Refer to the product manual if needed. Secure the installation screws at each corner of the back plate to the wall.
- 4). Attach the thermostat cover to the back plate. Put a battery in the cover before installing it. Covers usually just pop onto the back plate to install.
- 5). Turn the electrical breaker on and program your new thermostat to your preference.
