How to Troubleshoot & Repair a Laser Printer
- 1). Check the LCD on the printer, if it has one, for error codes, and then locate the error code in the printer's manual. This should tell you if there is a connectivity issue, software error or paper jam. The printer may also display an error message on the monitor of the computer that sent the print job, or the computer through which it is installed. if no message appears spontaneously, click the Start button and choose "Devices and Printers" from the Start menu. Navigate to the options for checking printer status and properties.
- 2). Check the physical connection between the computer and the printer. If the printer is a network printer, make sure that any network routers and switches are powered up and functional.
- 3). Reinstall the printer software and drivers if the error is software related. Make sure that the correct printer is selected when retesting.
- 4). Open the applicable printer door if there is a paper jam, and shine a flashlight inside to determine the extent of the jam. Remove stuck paper with needle-nose pliers or tweezers, and vacuum any loose debris from the inside. Close the door and run a test print.
- 5). Inspect the toner cartridge drum if there are image problems. Scratches or marks on the drum will show up on the paper. Replace the toner cartridge if the marks on the drum match the marks on the paper. Smudges may indicate a fuser problem. Inspect the fuser for damage or deterioration, and replace it if necessary.
