In the U.S., air pollution and smog is becoming more prevalent. Many people are unaware that many of their daily activities contribute to the pollution of the air. Smog, in fact, is a direct result of the air emissions from our vehicles and homes. There are a number of things that can be done, however, to reduce smog and air pollution. - Turn off lights and appliances when they are not in use. Use fans to cool your home instead of an air conditioning unit. The air conditioner is one of the highest energy-consuming appliances in the home. Consider installing a programmable thermostat to help cut energy consumption in the home. Also, use fluorescent or incandescent light bulbs to save energy and reduce emissions. Recycle paper, plastic and metals instead of throwing them away. If possible, re-use paper and plastic bags. Also, use products that have been recycled or have recyclable packaging.
- The emissions from the vehicles we drive every day contribute greatly to our smog and air pollution problem. Consider using alternatives methods of transportation such as cycling, car pooling or public transit. Reduce unnecessary driving by walking to shorter destinations, faxing documents and sending emails.
- Keep your vehicle running smooth and using less energy by getting regular tune-ups and oil changes. Keep tires properly inflated for better fuel efficiency. Also reduce fuel consumption and emissions by reducing idling and driving within the speed limits.
- Avoid using products such as aerosol sprays, oil-based paints and insect repellents that contribute to the air pollution that causes smog. Choose water based products or those products that have a low amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
