How to Judge a Trophy Antelope
- 1). Determine the length of the horns by comparing them to the antelope's ears. The ears are 6 inches long. If the horns are twice the length of the ears they are at least 12 inches long.
- 2). Study the antelope until it turns its head sideways to see the curl at the horn tips. A rounded curl with space between the tip and horn will be additional inches. A tight curl that turns down without a rounded curve will be shorter.
- 3). Consider the protruding prongs on each horn. The farther they project out from the horn the more inches they add up to. The average prong is 2 inches long.
- 4). Watch for the antelope to face you to judge the spread of the horns. Two measurements are made of the horn spread, between the tips and the widest inside point. Horns wide apart with tips even with the horns score more points.
- 5). Consider the overall mass of the horns. Four measurements are taken of the circumference of each horn. Horn bases equal to or wider than the ears will score well. Skinny horns with little width will have fewer inches.
