    • 1). Register your kayak. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft, all boats need to be registered, including kayaks and canoes. Register your kayak at local marinas, license bureaus, bait and tackle shops and sporting goods stores. In northeast Ohio, registration agents include Lakewood License Bureau in Cleveland, North Royalton License Bureau, Chardon License Bureau and Harbortowne Marine in Vermilion.

    • 2). Equip your kayak with safety gear such as a personal flotation device, first-aid kit, paddle leash and tow line.

    • 3). Access public boat ramps on numerous lakes in the region. Mosquito Lake in Trumbull County, Portage Lake in Summit County and Pymatuning Reservoir in Ashtabula County are in state parks.

    • 4). Explore the classified scenic rivers in the region including the Chagrin River, Cuyahoga River, Grand River and Little Beaver Creek --- middle or main branches.
