How to Catch Rainbow Trout in October in Minnesota

    • 1). Select a lake or mine pit that has rainbow trout in it (see a list of trout lakes in the Resources section). Some of the best rainbow trout lakes in Minnesota are Bad Medicine, Christmas and Square lakes. The Portsmouth and Yawkey mine pits are good as well.

    • 2). Select your gear. A 6.5- to 7-foot, medium-action rod is best. Pair it with a reel spooled with 6-pound test line. Attach a size 6 or 8 hook to the end of the line and a split shot weight or two about 12 inches up the line from the hook. If you have a second rod and reel, tie a 1/8-oz. silver spoon to it.

    • 3). Find a spot to fish. Rainbow trout will be near the bottom, and the best areas are where there is deep water close to the shoreline. Most mine pits slope steeply into deep water. Some areas of lakes slope quickly into deep water, while others have shallow water extending out from shore. Focus on the former.

    • 4). Attach a nightcrawler to your hook. Hook the bait multiple times through its body. Attach a bobber to your fishing line. Keep in mind the distance between your bobber and your hook is the distance beneath the water surface that your hook will hang.

    • 5). Walk along the shoreline and cast to different areas until you catch a rainbow trout. The fish will be in large schools in October, so once you catch one fish, keep working the area until they stop biting.
