Saltwater Fishing in New Jersey

    Fishing Spots

    • There are a variety of spots in New Jersey to saltwater fish. Fishing occurs from a private boat or a commercial charter boat that takes several fishermen out for daily excursions from numerous shore communities, such as Barnegat Bay or Somers Point near Ocean City. Smaller boat rental companies also provide fishing boats for recreational use during the summer months. Fishermen also fish from banks, jetties, piers and bridges. In addition, anglers cast their lines along the beach into the ocean surf in designated areas away from swimmers.

    Types of Fish

    • A number of fish species frequent New Jersey waters. Depending on the month, saltwater anglers catch fluke, flounder, croakers, cod, weakfish and even marlin. Anglers sometimes reel in a number of species of shark, such as sand tigers found in inlets and bays, and hammerheads as well as makos when in deeper waters offshore.

    Fishing Season

    • Fishermen--commercial and recreational--frequently crowd the Atlantic Ocean and its feeder bays, creeks and inlets on New Jersey's coastline during the summer months when tourist season is in full swing. However, a variety of fish species exist in these waters throughout the year. The saltwater fishing season never ends in New Jersey, and recreational fishermen with a passion for winter fishing catch winter flounder and white perch, among other cold water fish, in January through March. New Jersey's strategic position as a Mid-Atlantic state enables anglers to catch migrating fish off the shore by boat all year.

    Registration

    • New Jersey doesn't call for residents and tourists to buy a general saltwater fishing license, but it does ask anglers to register with the National Saltwater Angler Registry. Registration is free as of 2010 and is simply done through an online registration process. The purpose of registering provides some way to monitor and control fish populations. The state sets regulations on possession and size limits for fish species caught in New Jersey waters.

    Saltwater Fishing Regulations for 2010

    • Experienced New Jersey fishermen and novice ones should periodically review and familiarize themselves with the state’s fishing regulations as they can change. New Jersey imposes daily possession and size limits, which varies by fish species. The state’s 2010 Summary of Marine Fish & Shellfish Regulations is posted on Scott’s Bait & Tackle’s website and provides a list of catch restrictions. As of 2010, the state from time to time requests anglers provide information on the number of fish caught as well as their size, in an effort to review and manage its fisheries. Furthermore, it’s against the law to unnecessarily kill fish that are not meant for consumption in New Jersey.
