How to Register for Being Taken Off Telephone Marketing Lists
- 1). Tell the telemarketers who call you that you would like to be removed from their list. According to the Federal Communications Commission website, Congress first passed the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) in 1991 amid consumer concerns about the large number of unwanted telephone marketing calls they were getting. There are rules that require telemarketers to comply with any request you make for them not to make further calls to you, so do not hang up the phone until they verify that you have been removed from the list. If they give you any hassle, ask to speak to a supervisor. Ask for written and email verification that you have been removed and inquire about what you should do if you receive future calls from there. Tell them you know the FCC rules and regulations and will report them if you receive future calls.
- 2). Go to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov. In June 2003, the FCC and FTC created the national Do-Not-Call list. The National Do Not Call Registry provides you with a choice regarding whether or not you want to receive telemarketing calls at your home or mobile phone number. Most telemarketers will stop calling your telephone number after it has been on the registry for 31 days. If the telemarketers continue to call, you can file a complaint on their website about the company. There is no cost to register so it's a great way to be removed from telephone marketing lists. You have to call from the number you want to register by dialing 1-888-382-1222 and following the voice prompts or going to the website and clicking "Register Now." If you register online you will need to enter your phone number and email address and then click "Submit."
- 3). Avoid filling out your information on warranty cards. Most products are automatically registered for a warranty when you purchase them. These cards are mainly used for marketing purposes, according to the January, 2010 issue of Consumer Reports, and may be sold to other companies who can use your information in a way that may negatively affect you. Do not provide any personal information such as your phone number when filling out forms online if possible.
