Sand Bass Fishing Tips
- Sand bass often swim in schools, but they have characteristics that make them difficult to catch. They live in lakes and swim in all different depths. There are things you can look for that will help you spot sand bass and help you bring one in.
- Sand bass swim in schools and will often drive schools of shad to the top of the water. This makes feeding easier for them. Look for these schools of shad and cast your lures in the area. When bringing your boat close, turn the motor off and go in slowly otherwise the sand bass will know you are there. Sometimes if you wait long enough the schools will end up surrounding your boat and you will be sure to catch some.
- Gulls follow the schools of shad as well. This is because they know the sand bass will eventually push them toward the surface making feeding easy for them. If you see a place where gulls are diving and feeding, motor over there. Chances are very good you will find some sand bass. You can also just follow the gulls around for a while and see if they lead you anywhere because they are looking for the same thing you are.
- Keep the depth of the water in mind when making up your rigs. While sand bass do swim at all levels, they typically stay at different levels according to size. The smaller ones will feed up at the tops of the water, medium sized bass will be in the middle and the larger bass will be at the bottom. They feed on the large pieces of fish that are left over from the feeding frenzies. To make your lines sink deeper, add heavier weights onto them. You can use the same jigs for all sizes of bass though.
