How to Prevent Mood Swings

    • 1). Avoid unhealthy foods that are high in sugar, fat and caffeine. Greasy foods tend to weigh a person down, leaving them lethargic and potentially upset with themselves. In addition, food and drinks high in sugar and/or caffeine can result in a "crash" after a caffeine and sugar high. These crashes make people feel cranky, agitated and are a common cause of mood swings.

    • 2). Consume foods that are healthy and do so throughout the day. Keeping your blood sugar levels maintained and your stomach pleasantly full throughout the day will create a positive mood that won't swing.

    • 3). Participate in relaxing types of exercise such as yoga or pilates. These forms of exercise relax the mind and put you in a state of self-control. In addition, exercise releases endorphins into the blood stream, which makes you feel happy.

    • 4). Utilize natural remedies such as aromatic candles, incense or oils. This type of de-stressing technique has been applied for centuries. Certain smells, such as lavender, will ease your mind and put you in a relaxed state of mind. This leaves you in control of your feelings.

    • 5). Spend some of your time alone, especially if you feel a mood swing coming on. Dealing with people too much can cause a person to become irritated. It's important to take time out for yourself in order to relax and regain your composition.
