Definition

• According to the National Cancer Institute, povidone iodine solution contains a water soluble complex of iodine and polyvinlpyrrolidone (PVP) with microbicidal activity. Povidone is a broad spectrum microbicidal which is effective against bacteria, fungi, protozoa (the smallest one celled microscopic animal, several of which inhabits the gastrointestinal tract of humans) and viruses.
  
  

Function

• Povidone may be used to treat skin infections for cleaning wounds, ulcers and burns. In addition, povidone is used as a douche solution to treat vaginitis. It is available as a spray, solution or in ointment form.
  
  

Side Effects

• Skin irritation is a likely side effect when using povidone. The most serious effect is
  an allergic reaction, which could occur with the use of povidone solution. This is a serious life-threatening medical emergency. Seek immediate medical attention for a rash or hives along with itching and tightness in the chest or difficulty breathing. Other signs include swelling of the face, mouth and tongue or throat.
  
  

Side Effects of Povidone Douche

• When using Povidone douche solution be aware that in addition to some people having an allergic reaction, there are other side effects that may occur. These include severe stomach pain, excessive vaginal dryness and chills. Other side effects include fever, unusual vaginal discharge and vaginal pain, along with soreness, swelling and redness and irritation of the vagina.
  
  

Other Side Effects

• Anxiety, nervousness and agitation along with cramps, vomiting or loss of appetite may also occur. There may also be burning, dryness or peeling of the skin area treated. Seek your doctor's advice as soon as possible for any of these symptoms.

• Do not use povidone if you have had an allergic reaction to povidone in the past. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using povidone.
