How to Set Crab Pots
- 1). Set the crab pot by using bait the crabs like. Chicken necks work well and are also inexpensive.
- 2). Tie the chicken necks or the bait securely to the inside of the crab pots--about the middle of the bottom of the pot. Make sure you secure the bait with strong cord or wire.
- 3). Lower your crab pot into the water. Tie one end to the pot and the other to the pier. The pot should sit on the bottom.
- 4). Use boats to set your crab pots. Secure the pots to a float or a buoy to warn other boats to avoid getting tangled in the line.
- 5). Make sure you set your crab pots 100 feet from a trot line. Make sure also that your pot sits properly on the bottom so that the pot will not fall open and release the bait.
- 6). Place your pots early in the morning, much in the same manner of lobster fishermen.
