How to Locate the Fishing Holes of a New River

    • 1). Talk with someone knowledgeable about the water you will be fishing. This could be anyone from a friend who is an experienced angler to an employee at the local fishing shop.

    • 2). Search the water for "structure" that breaks up the current and creates pockets of slower water. Structure can be things such as boulders in the current or dropoffs and underwater ledges caused by abrupt changes in the stream bed topography.

    • 3). Look for fallen trees that break up the current and also provide fish with cover from overhead predators.

    • 4). Pay particular attention to undercut riverbanks. These likely fishing holes are formed at bends in the river where the current hollows out a riverbank in a manner that provides fish with shelter and easy access to food carried by the current.

    • 5). Look for fish in the water. With a little bit of practice, you will begin seeing some of the fish in the water itself. Even if you do not see the entire fish at first, you might see signs of the fish such as movement, the fish's shadow on the river bottom or the flash of a white mouth as the fish intercepts food being carried by the current.
